In 1955 a young woman called Ruth Ellis, was hanged for the murder of her partner, David Blakely. Ruth had a very passionate relationship with David, who she met at a London night club. They had been living together for nearly two years on and off, and they quarreled on a daily basis. However, Ruth suffered from his violent beatings, where she was bruised from 'head to foot.' As a result of one his brutal outbursts, where he punched her in the stomach, she lost an unborn baby.

David was a race car driver and was very well known by people. He was also a heavy drinker who spent most his time drinking with his friends at the place Ruth managed.

The death of David Blakely

Over Easter David refused to see his partner, despite having promised to do so, and repeated visits and phone calls from Ruth. Ruth also suspected him of having an affair with the nanny they had hired.

Feeling rejected and jealous, on Easter Sunday Ruth told her other boyfriend, Desmond, to drive her to a pub in Hampstead, North London, where David was drinking. She called for him and once again he ignored her. He eventually came out of the pub and she then shot him twice with a revolver. She then looked over his body and fired four more shots.
