NEW ORLEANS (November 15, 2006) — Troy Richardson of The Southwestern Vermont Board of Realtors and Hoisington Realty, Inc. in Bennington, Vermont was among the approximately 30,000 Realtors attending the National Association of Realtors annual Conference & Expo held here November 10-13, and pumping more than $30 million into the local economy.

Realtors, their families and guests came to New Orleans to add to their professional education, network with colleagues from all over the United States and from more than 45 countries around the world. Realtors also joined in a wide range of activities designed to help in the reconstruction of New Orleans and the wider Gulf Coast area stricken by Katrina.

During the meetings, Realtors attended seminars on the economy, public policy, equal opportunity and diversity, land use and property rights, the environment, international real estate and housing opportunities. Attendees had the opportunity to participate in hundreds of professional education sessions as well as learn the perspectives of local and national government and political leaders.

More than 650 exhibitors – the largest number on record in a single NAR trade show — appeared in New Orleans, displaying the latest in real estate-related hardware, software and other state-of-the-art industry tools.

More than 2,000 Realtors rolled up their sleeves and pitched in to build houses for those displaced by the disaster and helped restore communities and revitalize businesses. Realtors volunteered for community rebuilding projects throughout New Orleans including building homes in the Musicians’ Village, renovating homes in the historic St. Roch community, cleaning the City Park, and servicing a local food bank and several schools.

The conference provided attendees an opportunity to hear first-hand accounts o the state of post-Katrina recovery. Conference programs relating to New Orleans included sessions on natural disaster policy, planning for stronger disaster response communications, and expert presentations on land use, property rights and environmental policy, as well as a symposium on the impact of catastrophic disasters on unique cultures, such as that of New Orleans.

“Realtors care about our communities,” Richardson said. “Attending these meetings gave me the opportunity to learn more about the issues critical to the real estate industry on a national and even international level. The ideas provide inspiration for great things we could do here in Bennington,” Richardson said.

Experts from the U.S. Census Bureau, Tulane University and the University of Oregon discussed the latest demographic reports and trends, and how this information will affect business and local culture. Renowned storyteller Queen Nur provided theatrical heartfelt stories from New Orleans, based on true stories from families affected by Hurricane Katrina.

Representatives of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers were present to discuss the lessons learned from Katrina, together with Washington Post writer Michael Grunwald, author of The Swamp: The Everglades, Florida and Politics of Paradise.

Cultural highlights included an appearance by musician and Broadway performer Harry Connick Jr. Management guru Dr. John C. Maxwell, author of The 360 Degree Leader, spoke about how Realtors can act as leaders in day-to-day transactions. Former presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton appeared to recognize Realtors’ contribution to the Gulf Coast reconstruction and explain the importance of this effort.

New this year was the addition of the SIMA Second Home Pavilion, featuring resort developments from around the globe, and a Global Real Estate Theater, which offered a series of short presentations on a series of global market hot spots — from Dubai and Morocco to New Zealand to Nicaragua and Costa Rica – throughout the four-day exposition.

The annual plenary of the International Consortium of Real Estate Associations (ICREA) was also held in conjunction with the NAR Conference & Expo, where representatives from its 25 member associations met to conduct its annual business meeting.
