The Casey Anthony trial gripped America. After the not-guilty verdict was read by the clerk on July 7, 2011, people lashed out in anger at the jurors, feeling that, while Casey had been declared legally not guilty, she’d committed murder and escaped justice.
In another case, years before, the opposite had happened. Metis leader Louis Riel had been found legally guilty of a crime that some believe he didn’t do.
Writing about the Casey Anthony trial in the Wall Street Journal, noted Civil liberties lawyer Alan Dershowitz, stated that "a criminal trial is never about seeking justice for the victim." The victim in the Casey Anthony trial was her daughter Caylee. In Louis Riel's case, the victim was an English settler named Thomas Scott.
