A year ago, driver John Campbell, a member of the Little Brown Jug board of directors, was asked in a public forum prior to the running of the 63rd Jug what could be done to attract the country's top pacers without fail. One inquirer had pointed out the obvious: that number one ranked and once-beaten Somebeachsomewhere had by-passed a Jug entry to participate in the more lucrative event at The Red Mile in Kentucky.

Campbell's answer was succinct. "We've got to raise the purses," he said.

In 2008, the Jug purse totaled $551,225. This season, it increased to $609,150.
